Syntax LabThe FIU Syntax Lab is directed by Dr. Ellen Thompson. The lab focuses on psycholinguistics, the study of how people understand and produce language. We investigate how speakers are able to use implicit knowledge of grammar to guide interpretation of sentences in real time. Our lab utilizes theoretically-informed experimental approaches to the study of language structure. We investigate the processing of English, Spanish, Heritage Spanish, and Najdi, Libyan and Hijazi Arabic.
The lab makes use of several experimental tools, including self-paced reading and eye-tracking. The lab has a Tobii Pro X3-120 Eye-tracker and a Dell Precision M7710 Mobile Workstation. This equipment makes it possible to conduct state-of-the-art research in vision-based language studies in any location. |
